Liverpool face City on Sunday without Alexander Isak, who suffered a thigh injury while representing Sweden during the international break. Cody Gakpo is also nursing an ankle problem, while Hugo Ekitike continues his recovery from a long-term Achilles injury, leaving the team short of established attacking options.
Lewis Koumas could be considered for a first Premier League start, while Florian Wirtz is another possible solution as a false nine. Moving one of the wide players into a central position is another option, but Barcola’s comments suggest that has not been part of his instructions so far.
“No, not more than that,” the France international said when asked whether he had been told to take on a different role.
“He asks me to do what I can do, to play as usual, so I can play on the left and on the right.”
Barcola admitted he has a preferred position, but is comfortable operating on either flank if required.
“It's true that I prefer to play on the left, but it doesn't bother me to play on the right, so there's no problem with that and I try to be ready to play left or right.”
The £123 million summer arrival from Paris Saint-Germain could therefore remain an option out wide as Liverpool consider how best to compensate for their missing forwards. His flexibility gives the coaching staff choices, even if a central role has not yet been discussed with him.
The challenge against City will be a significant test, with both teams arriving unbeaten in the league, according to Barcola.
“I think it's going to be a very tough match, because Manchester City are a very good team. We'll be playing at home with all our fans, so I think we have that advantage and we know they'll be behind us.”
The winger acknowledged City’s quality but believes Liverpool can use their home support to their advantage.
“It's going to be tough, but we'll be ready. They haven't lost games, but we haven't lost any games either.”
With Isak unavailable and Gakpo a doubt, Liverpool must decide whether to trust a natural striker or adapt their attacking shape for one of the season’s biggest fixtures.
