But the relief at the club's lower Rhine home was short-lived as Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder immediately turned his attention to a summer overhaul that could see the squad transformed almost beyond recognition.
Schröder was candid with Sky after the Dortmund match about how he intends to use the two remaining fixtures against Augsburg and Hoffenheim.
"These two games are above all also an opportunity for players to show what they've got, because the question is who we plan with for the new season and who can leave. There will certainly be some in our squad who are not at all satisfied with their current situation and their playing time. There will be conversations — that's clear."
The rebuild is already well underway in several areas. Homegrown midfielder Rocco Reitz, 23, has been confirmed as joining RB Leipzig for a fee of €21 million, rising to a potential €23 million with bonuses.
Defender Marvin Friedrich, 30, will leave when his contract expires and is understood to have already agreed a return to Union Berlin on a deal through 2028. Four loan players will also depart: striker Alejo Sarco returns to Bayer Leverkusen after failing to make an impression, Kota Takai goes back to Tottenham Hotspur, Haris Tabakovic returns to TSG Hoffenheim having impressed but at a cost too high for a permanent deal, and Tomas Cvancara heads back having failed to establish himself at Celtic.
The only loan player whose return Schröder would consider making permanent is Yannik Engelhardt of Como 1907 — though SC Freiburg are also monitoring the 25-year-old midfielder.
Among the established squad, Florian Neuhaus represents a problem with no obvious solution. The 29-year-old former Germany international earns around €4 million a year, has a contract until 2027 and has been marginalised under both Schröder's coaching appointments this season.
Finding a buyer at that salary level will be difficult. Goalkeeper Jonas Omlin and striker Tomas Cvancara have no future in Gladbach, and both Lukas Ullrich and Giovanni Reyna have effectively disappeared from contention, the latter having failed to deliver on the considerable promise that accompanied his arrival.
The three players most likely to generate significant income are right-back Joe Scally, who has designs on a Premier League move ahead of a home World Cup with the United States, centre-back Nico Elvedi, who holds a €10 million release clause, and wide forward Franck Honorat, who has openly expressed interest in joining a club competing in European football next season.
Teenage striker Winsley Boteli, 19, is also expected to be sold, with interest from his loan club FC Sion, alongside enquiries from Belgium and Italy, though the fee is unlikely to be significant.
