Bischof to inherit bigger Bayern role after exits

Bayern Munich

Tom Bischof is set for an expanded role at Bayern Munich next season, with head coach Vincent Kompany planning to use the 21-year-old to fill the gap left by the departures of Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro.

The plan, as outlined by Kicker, has Bischof stepping into the third central midfield slot Goretzka vacated, while also being asked to cover the various positions Guerreiro used to fill in behind him.

In effect, Bischof would be covering the departures of two experienced squad members at once, giving him a significantly larger share of playing time than he received in his debut campaign at the club.

Bischof made the move to Bayern from Hoffenheim last summer and was often deployed out of position at full-back last season, with Joshua Kimmich, Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Guerreiro all competing for midfield minutes. With two of those rivals now gone, Kompany is understood to see Bischof as the player best placed to benefit, both in terms of regular starts and a more central role befitting his long-term development.

The report frames the shift as part of a broader changing of the guard in Bayern Munich's midfield, with Bischof set to become first alternative behind the established central pairing of Kimmich and Pavlovic heading into the new campaign.

Bischof made 39 competitive appearances in his first season at the club, totalling close to 1,700 minutes, contributing two goals and three assists despite spending much of the campaign out of his favoured central position.

Goretzka and Guerreiro between them logged more than 3,500 minutes last season, and Kicker reports that a significant share of that playing time is now expected to fall to Bischof as Kompany looks to integrate him more fully into the heart of his team.

The left-footed midfielder has previously spoken of the trust Kompany has shown him by deploying him across multiple positions, crediting the head coach with accelerating his development since his move from Hoffenheim.
