According to Sport Bild, president Herbert Hainer informed the sporting director of the decision during Bayern Munich's Asia tour, with his current deal, which runs to 2027, now set to be extended.
The five-member presidential committee approved the move at a meeting on 30 July, leaving the nine-member supervisory board to formally ratify the decision, most likely at its meeting on 25 August. Eberl is already understood to have five of the nine votes secured, with only the length and salary of his new contract still to be worked out.
The shift represents a significant turnaround. As recently as May, honorary president Uli Hoeness had rated Eberl's chances of an extension at only "60 to 40," telling reporters at the time: "there are still doubts."
Sport Bild reports that Eberl responded by deliberately increasing his contact with Hoeness and supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the weeks that followed, an approach that appears to have been well received internally.
His transfer business this summer has also strengthened his position. Eberl moved early to secure Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt, in a deal reported at around €50 million including bonuses, and worked alongside chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen on the signing of Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven for a reported €55 million. Hoeness has since gone from doubting Eberl's future to declaring his chances of an extension at "100 per cent," even publicly apologising to the sporting director for previously questioning his position ahead of May's DFB-Pokal final.
Eberl's remaining task is to move on some of the squad's more stubborn cases at appropriate prices, with João Palhinha, Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza all still on the books and in need of new homes before the market closes.
The presidential committee has also backed an extension for Dreesen, whose contract likewise runs to 2027, while sporting director Christoph Freund's situation remains unresolved, even though club insiders are said to be broadly satisfied with his work to date.
