Bayern's interest in Brown dates back to his youth, guardian reveals

Bayern Munich's move for Nathaniel Brown this summer was not a sudden discovery but the culmination of interest stretching back well over a decade, according to the man who raised him.

Christian Lichtenauer, who has been a guardian figure to the German international since Brown was two years old, told Abendzeitung that Bayern first made contact during Brown's time in Jahn Regensburg's youth system between 2012 and 2016.

"He quickly impressed at Jahn and became one of the best players in the team, so several clubs came forward to us," Lichtenauer said.

Asked which clubs had shown interest at that stage, Lichtenauer named a trio of options that included the eventual destination of Brown's next move.

"Ingolstadt, who were in the Bundesliga at the time, and 1. FC Nurnberg," he said. "Bayern Munich also invited us for an initial contact meeting. But the idea of taking the boy wasn't fully formed yet, because the distance would have been very far for us.

"His only option there would have been to go to the boarding school. That's also why we decided on Nurnberg."

It was at Nurnberg that Brown made his breakthrough into professional football, a step that eventually led to his development as a full Germany international. From there he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2024, where two productive Bundesliga seasons and a starring role in Germany's World Cup campaign this summer made him one of the most coveted young full-backs in the country.

Bayern completed his transfer to Munich this month for a reported โ‚ฌ55m, with Nurnberg standing to collect around โ‚ฌ7m of that fee themselves thanks to a 12.5% sell-on clause retained from his original move to Frankfurt.

The contact from Bayern Munich in those early years never resulted in a transfer at the time, but Lichtenauer's account suggests the club's interest in Brown has been consistent for the better part of his career, only now finally translating into a permanent switch to Munich as he arrives to provide competition and cover on the left side of Bayern's defence this summer.
