Bayern Munich have made Anthony Gordon their primary summer transfer target and have been in contact with the Newcastle United winger's representatives for several months, with head coach Vincent Kompany having given personal approval for the move.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg confirmed that talks between Gordon's management and Bayern are ongoing, and that the England international is firmly at the top of the Bundesliga club's wishlist for the wide positions. Kompany's backing is significant — it signals internal alignment at Bayern at a time when the club is also weighing backup options should the deal prove too costly to complete.

Gordon has had an outstanding season, scoring 17 goals and providing five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. Newcastle United signed him from Everton in 2023 for £45 million and he is now contracted until 2030. The club's asking price is reported to be in the region of £75 million to £80 million, a figure Bayern are currently not prepared to match.

According to Sport Bild, Gordon's agent visited Munich recently to discuss personal terms directly. The player himself is understood to be open to the move, with the successful adaptation of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace to Bayern having impressed him as a model for how the transition can work.

Bayern's strategy is to agree personal terms with Gordon first and then use that leverage when entering formal negotiations with Newcastle — a familiar approach for the German club when pursing reluctant sellers.

Gordon's Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged the speculation is unavoidable but has been careful to keep the focus on football.

"He's got no time to look left or right. He's got to be fully focused on straight ahead and the next game. I've been really impressed with him the last few weeks."

Newcastle are understood to be preparing for the possibility of Gordon's departure by drawing up a replacement shortlist. The club must balance the books under Premier League financial regulations this summer, which adds an element of pressure to accept a significant offer.

Beyond Bayern, Arsenal and Liverpool have both been linked with Gordon. Liverpool's interest has been described as not yet concrete, while Arsenal are monitoring his situation. Whether either Premier League club makes a formal move could complicate Bayern's plans — and push the price beyond what the Bavarians are willing to spend.
