Barcelona turn to Monaco's Caio Henrique if Cancelo deal falls through

FC Barcelona sporting director Deco has made contact with the representatives of AS Monaco left-back Caio Henrique as the Catalan club prepares contingency plans for the summer window.

The 28-year-old Brazilian is emerging as Barcelona's primary alternative to Joao Cancelo, whose permanent signing from Al-Hilal is proving complicated. The Saudi side are understood to be demanding a transfer fee, while Barcelona had hoped to secure Cancelo's services at a lower cost following his loan spell.

Henrique's contract with Monaco expires in 2027, giving this summer added significance for both player and club. Monaco are open to selling rather than risking losing him for nothing a year later and have set an asking price of around €15 million, making the deal financially accessible for Barcelona despite their ongoing financial constraints.

Sport, citing Brazilian portal UOL, reported that Deco has already opened dialogue with Henrique's agent, Giuliano Bertolucci. The director of football views the player as a profile similar to Cancelo — an attacking-minded full-back capable of contributing effectively in Hansi Flick's system.

Barcelona also retain the option of Alejandro Grimaldo of Bayer Leverkusen, who is also in the final year of his contract, though Marc Cucurella of Chelsea is considered too expensive to pursue.

Henrique has made 34 appearances for Monaco in all competitions this season, starting 29 of them, and recently returned from a thigh injury sustained in March. He holds a Spanish passport after years at Atlético de Madrid earlier in his career, which would allow Barcelona to register him without using a non-EU squad slot.

Barcelona's left-back situation remains unresolved, with Alejandro Balde the only recognised option in the position and the future of Cancelo dependent on negotiations that have yet to reach a conclusion.
