Barcelona have held initial talks with Martín's representatives over a contract extension, the fourth renewal the sporting department has opened since the summer window closed, behind more advanced talks already under way with Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart and Raphinha.
The conversations with Martín's camp amounted to little more than a first approach, but they were enough to confirm mutual interest: Barcelona want to keep the 24-year-old, and the former Cornellà player wants to stay.
The plan is to extend his contract, currently set to run to 2028 after he renewed in January 2025, by at least two further seasons, to 2030 or 2031, though the process is not considered imminent and could stretch into next year given the priority given to Bernal, Espart and Raphinha's own renewals.
Any new deal would also update Martín's terms to reflect his changed role under Hansi Flick.
A left-back by trade, Martín has been redeployed by Flick as a left-sided centre-back, a position he made his own in the second half of last season alongside Pau Cubarsí. He has featured in all six of Barcelona's league games so far this season, starting five of them.
Flick praised his attitude: "It's good to have players who like to work. Gerard is an example of how mentality, effort and attitude get things done. He gives everything, always tries to give his best on the pitch for the club. Playing for Barça is a dream for him, and it shows."
