Barcelona face a decision over Balde as Gerard Martín emerges as a long-term option

Barcelona could sanction a loan move for Alejandro Balde in January while working to secure Gerard Martín’s future after his rise this season.

Barcelona are facing two contrasting decisions at left-back, with Alejandro Balde potentially available for a January loan while the club works to extend Gerard Martín’s contract.

Balde, the 22-year-old Barcelona left-back, has been reduced to a peripheral role this season after falling behind João Cancelo and Xavi Espart in the pecking order. Despite that setback, he has continued working to recover his place in the team, although his longer-term future at Camp Nou is increasingly uncertain.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Barcelona are open to facilitating a temporary departure for Balde during the January transfer window. Manchester United and Liverpool are both reportedly ready to explore the possibility of signing the Spain international on loan.

Balde has previously established himself as Barcelona’s first-choice option on the left and remains a player with significant potential, but his current lack of regular football has opened the door to a change in his situation.

At the same time, Barcelona are keen to reward the progress of Gerard Martín, the 24-year-old defender who has become an increasingly important member of Hansi Flick’s squad.

According to Marca, Barcelona have begun working on a new contract for Martín, whose current agreement runs until 2028. Initial contact with his representatives has taken place in recent weeks, with the club keen to secure his future even though there is no immediate contractual urgency.

Martín joined Barcelona from Cornellà in 2023 to play for Barça Atlètic before gradually establishing himself in the first team. Initially used at left-back, he has increasingly made his position in central defence, where he has formed a partnership with Pau Cubarsí.

His versatility has proved particularly valuable to Flick, while his ability to move between the flank and centre of defence has allowed Barcelona to manage their options across the back line.

Martín made 51 appearances last season, underlining how quickly his status has changed since arriving from the lower levels of Spanish football.

Barcelona now appear keen to reflect that development in his contract. The club considers Martín an important part of the squad and wants to protect an asset whose value has increased considerably since his arrival.

The contrasting situations of Balde and Martín highlight the changing dynamics within Barcelona’s defence. Balde is seeking a route back into regular first-team football and could find that opportunity elsewhere in January, while Martín is moving in the opposite direction.

For Balde, a loan could offer the chance to rebuild his momentum and return to Barcelona with greater importance. For the club, meanwhile, retaining Martín would provide further security in a position where defensive depth remains important.

The next few months could therefore prove decisive for both players, with Barcelona potentially allowing one left-back to leave temporarily while committing to another for the long term.
