Barcelona have made contact with the representatives of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristián Romero as they pursue a contingency option at centre-back should their primary target, Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni, prove too expensive.

Romero, 28, suffered a knee injury during Tottenham's defeat to Sunderland earlier this month and will miss the remainder of the season. It may yet prove to have been his final appearance for the club, with his future deeply uncertain given Tottenham's ongoing relegation battle.

Barcelona sporting director Deco has identified Romero as an alternative to Bastoni, whose valuation of around €90 million at Inter Milan is considered prohibitive given the Catalan club's financial constraints.

Romero is reported to contain a release clause in his Tottenham contract that would be triggered in the event of relegation — a scenario that remains a genuine possibility with the club sitting in the bottom three with four games remaining, states Sport.

Atletico Madrid have also been monitoring Romero. Diego Simeone attempted to sign the Argentina international last summer but was unable to fund a deal. He was sent off twice in 32 appearances this season.
