The Barcelona winger finished second to Ousmane Dembélé in last year’s voting and accepts the final decision is outside his control.
“I have more possibilities than last year. I was missing the Champions League, which PSG won, but this year we have the World Cup,” Yamal told Teledeporte.
“The possibilities are there. The game has been there, everything has been there… but it doesn't depend on me. I am calm with what I have done.”
Yamal also believes his style of football should be considered when assessing the contenders, pointing to the entertainment value he brings to matches.
“In European football there are few players who play like I do and make people enjoy themselves in this way,” he said.
“That is my objective, I have always said it. Neymar was my reference for that.”
Yamal believes the Ballon d’Or should recognise players who stand apart from the rest.
“The Ballon d’Or has to do with that, with players who are a little above the others.”
The teenager also accepts his comments about the award can attract criticism but insists he will continue to speak honestly.
“They ask footballers to be sincere, then I say what I think… and they say ‘how can he say that?’ People ask for things they don't want afterwards.”
“I am not going to change the way I am until I retire, nor am I going to say something I don't think.”
Despite backing his own chances, Yamal also revealed who he would choose for the award recognising the best young player.
“I would give (Pau) Cubarsí the young Ballon d’Or.”
