The 22-year-old has played only 12 minutes so far, appearing in the LaLiga meeting with Racing at the Spotify Camp Nou. He was an unused option for the other six league fixtures and the Champions League match against Feyenoord, while he was not even included in the squad for the opening game against Elche.
Hansi Flick expects more from Balde and currently believes other options are ahead of him. The Barcelona coach considers Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo to be in better competitive form, leaving Balde with limited opportunities on the left side of the defence.
That has not changed Balde’s thinking. He remains convinced that his situation can improve because the season is long and the number of matches will eventually create opportunities. He has a contract with Barcelona until June 2028 and is not considering a January departure.
Barcelona, however, have a different view. The club believes Balde could reconsider his position when the transfer window opens and would be prepared to examine a sale if he does not change his mind.
Balde’s value also makes his situation significant for the club’s finances. Barcelona have previously viewed his departure as a potentially useful operation and consider the position sufficiently covered to allow him to leave.
There was interest in the defender during the summer, with Manchester United, Manchester City, Benfica and Aston Villa among the clubs linked with a move. Balde rejected those possibilities because he wanted to remain at Barcelona and fight for his place.
The club’s financial situation could make the issue more pressing in January. Barcelona need to generate income if they are to strengthen their squad, while selling Balde would also reduce the wage bill even without bringing in a replacement.
Barcelona would welcome a change of heart, while Balde believes continued work and a long season can still alter his position under Flick.
