Aubameyang was officially unveiled as a Deportivo La Coruña player on Tuesday at the club's Abegondo training complex, with the Gabonese striker saying his childhood memories of watching the club compete in the Champions League played a part in his decision to sign.
"Since they called we had to listen to them, I've known Deportivo since I was small, when they played the Champions League, being able to help the team is key for me," said Aubameyang, who has signed a two-year deal after scoring 14 goals for Marseille last season.
Sporting director Fernando Soriano welcomed the 37-year-old by highlighting his versatility, describing him as a forward capable of playing centrally, off the front, or from either flank. Aubameyang, whose career has also taken in Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and a brief spell at Barcelona in 2022, already got his first minutes in Deportivo colours during a pre-season friendly against Real Oviedo.
The striker, who has captained sides at both Marseille and with Gabon, said leadership was a role he had grown accustomed to.
"It's a role I've already taken on at Marseille and Gabon. I'm an older player and I have to set an example," he explained, adding that his fitness remained a point of pride despite his age:
"They've seen that I always give my maximum, I want to play and that gives me the strength to continue at 37."
He has chosen to wear the number seven shirt, a number he previously wore at Saint-Étienne.
"There have been many great players who have worn it at this club," he said, also noting that reuniting with Charlie Patiño, formerly of Arsenal, had been a further draw. "I've spoken with Charlie, he's spoken very well to me about the city and the club. A Coruña lives for football and that makes me want to get started already."
Aubameyang, who has family ties in Spain, said returning to the country carried personal significance following his spell at Barcelona.
"It's very important for me to come back to Spain again. I told my grandparents I would play in Spain, I'm happy and proud," he concluded.
He is expected to lead the line for a Deportivo side newly promoted back to La Liga, and was characteristically direct about what fans should expect from him this season.
"I'm going to score goals and hand out plenty of assists, but mainly I've come here to win a lot of matches," he said.
