TalkSPORT report that Aston Villa are weighing up a move for the left-winger, who is valued at around £40million. AS Roma had appeared to be leading the race for his signature, but Manchester United and Tottenham have also shown interest, and Unai Emery is now hoping to turn Villa Park into an appealing destination.
Villa's interest comes on the back of their own major departure. Chelsea's British-record £117million capture of Morgan Rogers has left Emery needing a direct replacement, and Summerville's versatility and pace on the left flank fit the profile.
It has been a turbulent window for Villa so far. They have also lost midfielder Youri Tielemans to Manchester United in a £35million deal, adding further urgency to their rebuilding plans. Their business has not been entirely one-way, though, with a club-record £60million already spent on Swiss wonderkid Johan Manzambi, whose deal was struck by hijacking Newcastle's own £49million agreement for the player.
That precedent explains why a repeat approach for Summerville would not be out of character. Villa have shown a willingness this summer to move decisively when a target becomes available, even where rival clubs believe a deal is close to being finalised.
Summerville has endured a mixed spell since joining West Ham United from Leeds, but he ended last season strongly and carried that form into the World Cup, where his performances for the Netherlands drew admiring glances from across Europe. West Ham's relegation to the Championship makes an exit all but inevitable, and it looks highly unlikely he will follow Jarrod Bowen's lead in staying at the London Stadium to fight for promotion.
With Villa's finances boosted by the Rogers sale and their sights firmly set on strengthening out wide, Summerville's next move now hinges on which suitor is willing to move fastest. West Ham, mindful of their own rebuild after relegation, are expected to hold out for the best available fee rather than accept the first offer that lands on their desk.
