Financial constraints are shaping Aston Villa's summer business, and that could work in favour of Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres, who are lined up for fresh terms before the new Premier League campaign gets under way.

Unai Emery has built his defence around the pairing, and with two years still to run on each contract, there is no pressing need to act โ€” but Villa's hand may effectively be forced by financial fair play restrictions imposed by UEFA.

European football's governing body has made clear that significant new arrivals will not be sanctioned unless Villa raise funds through a sale first. In that climate, rewarding players already in the building carries far less risk than gambling on the transfer market.

Selling either centre-back now would come at a cost too. Torres, 29, and Konsa, 28, still carry sizeable resale value, and any suitor would have to meet a hefty asking price for either man.

Both defenders have spent the past fortnight on international duty. Konsa featured for England as they beat Mexico 3-2, while Torres was overlooked for Spain's World Cup squad entirely.

It is Konsa who has enjoyed the more dramatic rise under Emery, going from fringe player to full international during the Spaniard's tenure. Speaking before Villa's Europa League final win over Freiburg in May, he explained what has changed since Emery's arrival.

"The first thing he wanted to do was to get Aston Villa back in European football - he did that," Konsa said. "You believe him because of his career and the trophies that he has won, also the teams he has managed and players he has worked with.

"You have no choice but to believe in him and put your all into what he is telling us. He knows the competition well and has won it four times.

"When you have a manager like Unai, who knows the tournament well, it gives you more confidence 100 per cent."

Since replacing Steven Gerrard in late 2022, Emery has taken Villa from relegation strugglers to Champions League regulars and, this year, European champions. Locking down his defensive spine now would give him a settled base to build on for whatever comes next.
