Gomez, 29, has spent eleven seasons at Liverpool since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and is one of the longest-serving players in the club's recent history. He has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup at Anfield.
But consistent injuries have prevented him from ever fully nailing down a starting position, and this season was no different — 31 appearances in all competitions, with only 15 starts.
The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that Villa are among the clubs tracking his availability. Besiktas and AC Milan have also monitored his situation, though the Italian club are undergoing a sweeping leadership overhaul that is likely to slow any external recruitment planning.
Villa manager Unai Emery is building his squad around Champions League football next season and wants depth across the defensive line. Gomez's versatility — capable of operating at centre-back or right-back — makes him attractive as a flexible option in a group that will need to manage a significant increase in game volume.
Liverpool's position is straightforward. With Conor Bradley returning from a long-term knee injury and Jeremie Frimpong better suited to a more advanced wing-back role, the club need a right-back option regardless of what happens with Gomez. If a reasonable offer arrives for a player entering the final year of his deal, the commercial logic of accepting it is hard to resist.
Liverpool's broader summer priorities lie elsewhere. Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig and Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain are the winger targets manager Arne Slot has identified. The signing of young Celtic centre-back Olamilekan Jikiemi has also been reported. Defensive reinforcement is in scope, but rebuilding the forward line takes precedence.
Gomez almost moved to Crystal Palace last summer in a deal that would have involved Marc Guehi moving in the other direction. That transfer collapsed. He remains at Anfield, valued by those around him but without a clear path to the starts his level of quality warrants.
Villa are well positioned to offer exactly that.
