Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris has threatened legal action against Jamie Carragher over remarks the club has branded “unacceptable insults” towards its supporters.

Villa announced their intention to take action in a statement published on Friday and signed by Sawiris, making clear that the response came directly from the club’s chairman. The intervention followed criticism from supporters after Carragher questioned whether Unai Emery would be interested in taking charge of Manchester United.

The statement read:

“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans.

“Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.

“Nassef Sawiris, Chairman”

The wording was brief, but the decision to attach Sawiris’s name gave the announcement particular weight. Villa did not specify what legal action they intend to pursue or identify the precise remarks they believe crossed the line.

Carragher made the comments during an episode of the Stick to Football podcast while discussing the uncertainty surrounding United’s managerial position. Michael Carrick has come under pressure following a poor start to the campaign, prompting debate about possible successors and Emery’s credentials.

The former Liverpool defender argued that the Villa manager could be tempted by the chance to lead another major club, suggesting United would represent a step up in stature.

“Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again,” Carragher said.

“There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not.

“So Real Madrid will take Manchester United’s best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo.

“And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they'll take their players or manager, so shut the [expletive] up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

Those remarks prompted an angry response from Villa supporters, particularly the suggestion that their club would always sit below United in football’s hierarchy. Carragher subsequently defended the comments as a joke, while insisting that he had praised Emery and Villa over a long period.

“It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd,” he wrote on social media.

“I hope these clown clips show me praising Emery/Villa like I have done for years & saying how pleased I was you won [the 2026 Europa League] in Istanbul.”

The dispute now extends beyond the original exchange between pundit and supporters, with Villa’s chairman placing the club’s name behind a threat of legal proceedings. The club has yet to outline the grounds for its proposed action, leaving the next move unclear. The statement nevertheless makes clear that Villa regard the comments as a matter requiring a formal response from the highest level of the organisation.
