What remains unresolved is his destination, with Borussia Dortmund's long-expected move now complicated by interest from Barcelona.
Dortmund had appeared to be closing in on the Kosovo international as they look to bolster their attack following Karim Adeyemi's impending departure to Barcelona and continued uncertainty over Serhou Guirassy's future. Yet according to the Catalan paper Sport, an agreement between the German runners-up and Asllani has stalled, with Barcelona now also plotting for the 23-year-old as they search for cover following Ferran Torres's expected move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Barcelona have no recognised out-and-out centre-forward on their books beyond top target Julian Alvarez, and Sport reports that Asllani is very much part of that thinking too.
"Borussia Dortmund is interested in him, but Asllani has delayed negotiations in the hope of possible interest from Barca. The club has spoken with him and his camp and knows he wants to come, but the decision lies with Flick," the report states.
Asllani's contract at Hoffenheim includes a release clause of €29m, a figure Barcelona would not consider prohibitive, particularly once Torres's sale is completed. Sport also names out-of-contract Dusan Vlahovic, formerly of Juventus, as an alternative option under consideration, but the clear focus remains on Asllani, who appears to be playing for time in the hope that Barcelona ultimately come calling.
Dortmund's frustration is understandable given how close a deal had reportedly been. Sources in Germany suggested last month that the two clubs had all but agreed terms, with Dortmund prepared to activate the release clause outright before Asllani's camp asked for the move to be paused.
His stock has risen sharply over the past year, with his market value said to have more than doubled from around €8m to €18m, and Bayern Munich and Cologne have also been credited with interest without ever advancing talks.
