The Sweden international arrived from Sporting CP last summer with the expectation that he would become Arsenal’s first-choice centre-forward. Instead, Kai Havertz has moved ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving Gyökeres frustrated by his limited opportunities and lack of goals.
Spanish media sources are reporting the 28-year-old is considering whether to seek a move when the January transfer window opens. Atletico Madrid are among the clubs reported to be interested, although no completed deal or formal offer has been confirmed.
Gyökeres joined Arsenal with a formidable scoring record from his time in Portugal, but translating that form into the Premier League has proved more difficult. The competition for the central attacking position has also become more intense as Havertz has returned to prominence.
The German has started ahead of Gyökeres in recent matches, prompting speculation about how long the Swedish striker will be prepared to accept a reduced role.
A January departure would represent a significant change of direction so soon after his arrival in north London. Gyökeres remains under contract with Arsenal until 2030, giving the club a strong negotiating position should another side attempt to sign him.
There is, however, a distinction between reports of growing frustration and a settled decision to leave. The current claims point to a possible winter move rather than an agreement that Arsenal will allow him to depart.
The situation also comes as Arteta continues to show confidence in Havertz, whose ability to lead the line has become increasingly important to Arsenal’s attacking plans.
Gyökeres’ next opportunities will therefore carry added significance. A return to goals and a more regular role could alter the picture before January, but continued time on the sidelines would leave the speculation over his future difficult to ignore.
