Arsenal midfielder Christian Nørgaard has retired from international football after 41 appearances for Denmark, citing the desire to spend more time with his family and the natural moment created by the country's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Nørgaard announced the decision in a post on Instagram, writing with characteristic directness about a choice he described as simultaneously difficult and straightforward.

"On the one hand it has been a difficult decision, because there is virtually nothing I love more than checking in with the teammates and staff at Marienlyst. And there is virtually nothing I love more than playing matches in red and white in a sold-out, buzzing Parken.

"I have simultaneously felt great trust from Brian Riemer, and a personal highlight for me was the victory over Portugal in 2025 — one of those magical evenings in Parken where I got to take on the leadership role in midfield that I love."

He was equally clear about why the moment felt right.

"On the other hand it has been an easy decision, because I want more time with my family — and with the missed World Cup qualification, it also feels natural now to give space to the talented and ambitious players that Denmark fortunately still has in abundance."

Nørgaard singled out the summer of 2021 — Euro 2020 — as the most beautiful chapter of his international career, a tournament in which Denmark reached the semi-final and captivated football supporters across Europe. He praised former Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand for the football played and results achieved during his time as a senior international.

The 32-year-old joined Brentford in 2019 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club before signing for Arsenal. He has been a consistent performer in midfield throughout this season and shows no signs of stepping back from club football.

"Now it is over. I look forward to cheering as a fan — but no longer as part of the squad. Thank you to the players, staff and fans for having been part of making a childhood dream come true."
