The winger was substituted in the 18th minute after appearing to suffer a leg problem, leaving Arsenal waiting for further information on the severity of the injury. The Daily Mail reported that Tzolis left the pitch with his shirt covering his face.
Tzolis has been an important part of Mikel Arteta’s side since joining the club, starting all five of Arsenal’s Premier League matches this season. He has made eight appearances across all competitions and has contributed four assists.
The latest setback comes only days after Kai Havertz suffered an injury while playing for Germany against the Netherlands. The Arsenal forward lasted 30 minutes before leaving the field with what was reported as a hamstring problem.
Havertz had been involved in all five Premier League matches before the international break and had scored three goals in seven appearances across competitions. Germany subsequently confirmed that he had sustained a muscle strain and returned to London for treatment.
The injury occurred after Quinten Timber made a late challenge on Havertz. Timber is the brother of Arsenal defender Jurriën Timber.
Tzolis’ injury therefore adds to a growing list of concerns for Arteta at a particularly awkward point in the season. Arsenal have also been without Declan Rice, while Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White and William Saliba have had fitness issues.
Martin Ødegaard also left Norway’s defeat by Portugal with a foot problem, although the Arsenal captain subsequently returned to the Norway side for their meeting with Wales.
The extent of Tzolis’ problem remains unclear and Arsenal are expected to await medical assessments before determining whether he will miss club football.
His absence would remove another established option from Arteta’s attack. The Greece international has started every Premier League game since arriving and has already supplied a significant amount of creative output.
Arsenal return to domestic action after the international break against Brighton, although the final make-up of Arteta’s attacking options will depend on the fitness reports from his international contingent.
Tzolis had also been in strong form for Greece, making his latest setback particularly frustrating. The immediate priority for Arsenal is now to establish whether the injury is serious enough to affect his availability when the Premier League resumes.
