Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, confirming the England defender on a four-year deal, hours before kick-off.

The move, first reported as agreed earlier this week, has now been finalised for a fee of £51m plus £4m in potential add-ons, with Konsa's contract carrying the option of a further year. He passed his medical on Thursday, meaning the deal was signed off just in time for Arsenal's Premier League title defence against newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.

The fee represents a significant win for Villa, given Arsenal had initially valued the 28-year-old, who had two years left on his contract, at around £30m. Konsa was not part of Unai Emery's squad for last week's UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, having been given extended leave following the World Cup.

Konsa made 286 appearances for Villa since joining from Brentford in 2019, helping the club evolve from relegation battlers into regular European contenders. Last season, he featured 48 times in all competitions, scoring twice and adding one assist, as Villa won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League to qualify for this season's Champions League. He also wore the captain's armband in John McGinn's absence as Villa's vice-captain.

His summer form for England only strengthened his case. Konsa played every minute of every England match at this year's World Cup as Thomas Tuchel's side finished third, starting seven of the Three Lions' eight games at the heart of defence alongside Marc Guehi, and filling in at right-back during the quarter-final win over Norway.

Konsa becomes Arsenal's fifth major addition of the summer, following the arrivals of Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes, and gives Mikel Arteta fresh cover in defence with William Saliba out for an extended period and Jurrien Timber still working his way back from a long-term groin injury.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, must now find a replacement of their own after losing a player who had become a fixture of Unai Emery's back line, with the club having already been credited with interest in Southampton's Taylor Harwood-Bellis as a potential option.
