The incident came after Ødegaard had already played the ball, with Silva arriving late and catching the Arsenal midfielder. Silva was shown a yellow card, but Norway players felt the challenge could have warranted a red.
Ødegaard reacted immediately, shouting “f*** you” at Silva before remaining on the pitch. The Arsenal captain was visibly uncomfortable after the challenge and later revealed that he had taken a knock to his ankle.
“He completely lost his head,” Ødegaard told reporters. “He just kicked me down long after I had played the ball. I didn't understand what he was doing.”
“I took a knock to my ankle. It probably won't feel great tonight, but I'm hoping it clears up over the next few days.”
The incident has attracted particular attention because Ødegaard endured a difficult injury-hit campaign last season, missing 30 matches for club and country after suffering seven separate injuries.
Norway defender Leo Østigård was among those who criticised Silva’s challenge.
“It’s very late. When you see it afterwards on video, it’s very ugly. It could well be red,” Østigård said.
“It’s a terrible tackle. It’s just appallingly bad. That’s the sort of thing we don’t want to see for our captain. When it comes that long after the play, it looks quite deliberate.”
Østigård also suggested Ødegaard’s influence had played a part in the frustration surrounding him.
“He was unlucky with a lot of injuries last year, and there’s nothing he can do about that,” he said. “They’re going after him because he’s run rings around most of them in midfield. They’re obviously frustrated, but you can’t do things like that.”
Norway manager Ståle Solbakken said Ødegaard needed immediate treatment after taking the knock.
“He got a real bump on his ankle. It would be wise to get off the field to get ice and compression on,” Solbakken said.
Real Madrid's Silva was approached about the incident after the match but initially continued walking before offering a brief response.
“That’s football, my friend,” he said.
The challenge came late in a match Portugal won 2-1, with João Félix and Gonçalo Ramos scoring either side of Erling Haaland’s equaliser.
Ødegaard’s immediate concern will now be his ankle, with the midfielder hoping the problem settles over the next few days. Arsenal will be monitoring his condition closely when he returns from international duty.
