Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium as Ezri Konsa and Gabriel scored, with Mikel Arteta praising his team's mentality and David Moyes lamenting a slow start.

Konsa opened the scoring in the seventh minute, reacting quickest after Martin Ødegaard's corner caused trouble in the Everton penalty area. Gabriel doubled Arsenal's lead in the 68th minute, heading home Ben White's cross to secure the points.

The result moved Arsenal level on points with Manchester City after the leaders lost at Aston Villa earlier in the day. For Arteta, the victory was especially satisfying given the demands of a packed schedule and the team's recent travel.

“Yes we're very happy with the victory, with the performance and with the week, because we were given a terrible schedule. Sunday afternoon, then Wednesday night in Munich, coming here really late on Thursday and having to play again in the Premier League against a really tough opponent on Saturday at 3pm. We have overcome every hurdle, on top of some injuries, and I love the mentality of the team and the quality that we've shown today.”

The manager singled out Gabriel after the defender continued despite appearing to be hurt before scoring Arsenal's second goal.

“Well, he's a clear example, when I'm talking about the mentality of the team, obviously the mentality of the team is the mentality of the individuals in the team. Gabi is a great example of that because we were all scared. Not because of the way he went down, but the reaction of the players that were next to him. Immediately he says that he wants to continue and then he scores a goal to help us win the game. That's what we need from our players.”

Everton defended for long periods but struggled to create enough attacking threat to recover from the early setback. Moyes felt the first goal made the task harder, even though he was satisfied with much of his team's defensive work.

“[Going 1-0 down early] made it hard and we couldn't really get ourselves back into the game after that.

“Huffed and puffed a little bit, stuck at it for long parts of the game, which was good. We never gave them anything easy but, in the end, we didn't have enough.”

Moyes believed Everton had defended reasonably well from set pieces, despite the opening goal, but admitted his side needed to make more of its chances.

“I need to see it again but I know it was a little bit scruffy at the back post. We didn't quite clear it or get a touch on it. But, apart from that, we defended pretty well from most [set pieces].”

The Everton manager also pointed to opportunities for Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, while praising Jake O'Brien and Tyrique George for their performances.

“We didn't do enough in an attacking sense but we certainly did a really good job defensively, try to make it difficult.

“But we really wanted to score some goals. We had a couple of chances, Thierno [Barry] in the first half and then a bit unlucky with Keirnan [Dewsbury-Hall] late in the game. But we certainly need to do that better than we did today.”

Arsenal's two centre-backs provided the goals, while Everton left north London with another defeat and the need to find greater cutting edge in attack.
