The Switzerland captain, who now plays for Inter Milan, addressed the controversy after his country’s 3-0 victory over North Macedonia in Lucerne.
Akanji spent three years at Manchester City between 2022 and 2025, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League among a collection of major honours. The prospect of those achievements being affected by the case has left the defender hoping for a positive outcome.
“I’m still in contact with some players, but I don’t know anything more than you do,” Akanji said, according to Swiss outlet Nau.
“When I was there, they told us to stay calm, that they had everything under control and that nothing serious had happened. I trust the people responsible at Manchester City and I’m convinced that is the case.
“I hope I don’t lose my titles. It would be a shame. But I only see everything through the news.”
The comments reflect the uncertainty surrounding City’s position following an independent commission’s findings over alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations. The club has challenged the verdict, leaving the eventual consequences unresolved.
Akanji was not involved in the club during the entire period covered by the financial case, but his time at the Etihad Stadium brought him some of the biggest successes of his career.
The defender was asked whether he believed the trophies he had won could ultimately be taken away. Rather than offer a detailed prediction, he responded with a pointed remark about the continued scrutiny of footballers and their past actions.
“Who knows what else they will discover? You are still looking for things linked to the coronavirus that happened five years ago,” he said.
His response appeared to take aim at the journalists questioning him, with the remark referring to earlier controversies involving Switzerland internationals Breel Embolo and Granit Xhaka.
Akanji did not suggest that he knew more about City’s case than the public. Instead, he reiterated that he was following developments through the media and placing his trust in the people running his former club.
For a player who collected significant honours during his spell in Manchester, the uncertainty remains an unwelcome distraction from the achievements themselves.
The outcome of City’s appeal will determine what follows, with Akanji among the former players waiting to see whether the trophies they celebrated during their time at the club will remain untouched.
