Lucien Agoumé has emerged as a key figure for Sevilla after rejecting a major offer in the summer, with Premier League clubs now expected to test the midfielder’s resolve.

Agoumé has become one of the main reasons behind Sevilla’s strong start to the LaLiga season, with the midfielder finally looking comfortable in the defensive midfield role the club had wanted him to occupy.

Sevilla have won four of their first seven league matches, drawing one and losing only to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Agoumé has been central to that improvement after previously struggling to establish himself as a convincing pivot at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

His decision to stay during the summer could now prove particularly valuable. Agoumé rejected an offer from Saudi Arabia worth between €20 million and €25 million, while Sevilla had been prepared to use his sale to generate significant income.

The club now has reason to be pleased that the midfielder remained. His performances have strengthened his position within the team and are expected to attract more serious interest when the January transfer window opens.

Premier League clubs have been following Agoumé for some time, and Sevilla believe the first approaches could become more substantial in the coming months.

The French midfielder joined Sevilla from Inter in January 2024 on loan before the Spanish club gradually increased its share of his economic rights. Sevilla now own 90 per cent, with Inter retaining the remaining 10 per cent.

Agoumé cost Sevilla €9 million and has a €40 million release clause. That figure is viewed as attainable by a number of English clubs, particularly if the 24-year-old continues to perform at his current level.

The arrival of Youssouf Fofana from Milan has also helped Agoumé, with his compatriot recently describing him as a leader within the dressing room.

Agoumé’s improvement has therefore changed the conversation around a player Sevilla were willing to sell only a few months ago. His decision to stay has strengthened the team, while his form could now force the club to consider offers far greater than those it rejected in the summer.
