Genk's Konstantinos Karetsas, prized for his technical quality and creativity on the left, was another name Milan pushed hard for in recent weeks, while a separate approach for Kerim Alajbegovic fell away once the player chose Juventus instead.
More recently, Milan's recruitment staff have made contact with Arsenal over Nwaneri, the 19-year-old English-Nigerian midfielder who has attracted admirers across half of Europe. The teenager progressed through Arsenal's Hale End academy before signing a new long-term contract until 2030 last summer, a deal that leaves Milan needing to negotiate not just a fee but also convince the Gunners to part with a player they still rate highly.
Arsenal are believed to be weighing an asking price of around £50m, though Milan are far from the only suitors: Fulham, Everton and RB Leipzig have also registered interest, while Como and Borussia Dortmund have previously been credited with tracking the player.
No official negotiations have yet begun between Milan and Arsenal, though Corriere dello Sport reports a concrete approach has been confirmed from the Rossoneri, with a possible structure involving an initial permanent deal that includes a buy-back clause for the London club.
Nwaneri's underwhelming loan spell at Marseille last season complicates matters for any interested party. Having initially impressed with a goal on his debut against Lens, his opportunities dried up significantly following Roberto De Zerbi's exit from the Ligue 1 club, and he finished the campaign with just 11 appearances, two goals and one assist across 422 minutes.
The previous season, by contrast, Mikel Arteta used him 37 times across the Premier League, domestic cups and Champions League, with Nwaneri contributing nine goals in total.
