Federico Valverde has denied that he and Real Madrid teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni came to blows after the Uruguayan midfielder was taken to hospital on Thursday with a head injury that will keep him out of Sunday's El Clásico against Barcelona.

Real Madrid confirmed Valverde, 27, has been diagnosed with cranioencephalic trauma — a form of concussion — and must rest for 10 to 14 days under medical protocols. The club has opened disciplinary proceedings against both players following the incident at the Valdebebas training ground, which has been described internally by several members of staff as the most serious ever experienced at the facility.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Valverde said the injury came when he accidentally struck a table during a heated argument, and insisted no physical contact took place between himself and Tchouaméni.

"At no point did my team-mate hit me, and I didn't hit him either. I feel that my anger about the situation, my frustration at seeing some of us struggling to get through the end of the season on our last legs, giving it our all, pushed me to the point of arguing with a team-mate."

He acknowledged a prior row between the two on Wednesday and addressed what he sees as a breach of dressing room trust.

"In a normal locker room, these things can happen and are usually resolved internally without it becoming public knowledge. Clearly, someone here is spreading rumours, and with a season without titles, where Real Madrid is always under scrutiny, everything gets blown out of proportion."

Valverde was candid about the emotional state driving the confrontation.

"I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry because this situation hurts me. Real Madrid is one of the most important things in my life. The result is a build-up of things that culminate in a senseless fight, damaging my image and leaving room for doubt."

An emergency meeting was held on Thursday evening at Valdebebas, attended by club president Florentino Pérez, head coach Álvaro Arbeloa and captain Dani Carvajal. Real Madrid will update on disciplinary outcomes once internal procedures are complete.

Real sit 11 points behind Barcelona in La Liga with four games remaining. They also exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage. Valverde described the season as another "wasted year."

A Barcelona win or draw at Camp Nou on Sunday hands them a second consecutive La Liga title with three games to spare. Real Madrid will face it without their captain — and whatever unity they hoped the crisis meeting restored will be tested the moment the whistle blows.
