The deal is a guaranteed £85m with no add-ons — an unusual structure that reflects how settled Spurs were on the target and how confident they were of getting it done ahead of Manchester United.
The 21-year-old had been Tottenham's primary midfield target after their £80m bid for Sandro Tonali was rejected by Newcastle United. Tonali has four years remaining on a contract he extended to repay the faith Newcastle showed during his 10-month ban for breaching the FA's betting rules.
Fernandes was born in Olhão in the Algarve and came through Sporting CP's academy, making 10 first-team appearances before a loan at Estoril and a move to Southampton in August 2024. West Ham United paid more than £40m to bring him to the Premier League a year later.
He spent one season at the London Stadium, scoring a string of impressive goals — including a strike after 29 seconds against Aston Villa — and was nominated for the league's Young Player of the Season award. Back-to-back relegations with Southampton and West Ham made no dent in his growing reputation, and he has since made his senior Portugal debut.
Manchester United were in discussions with his agent Jorge Mendes throughout the process but withdrew, maintaining their principle of only signing players at what they judge to be the correct valuation — a stance they believe has delivered value in previous windows.
PSG had also shown interest in the midfielder.
Fernandes becomes Tottenham's fifth signing of a busy summer. Roberto De Zerbi's side have already secured goalkeeper Martin Dubravka from Burnley, centre-backs Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m, and Andy Robertson on a free from Liverpool.
