Torino beat Monza 3-2 in Serie A, with goals from Kian Fitz-Jim, Rafik Belghali and Nikola Vlašić securing victory despite Nathan Patterson’s late own goal.

Ignazio Abate’s side made the stronger start and took the lead in the 39th minute. Giovanni Simeone won possession and played in Fitz-Jim, who moved into the area and finished past Noel Törnqvist.

Monza responded just after half-time. A misplaced back-pass from Pietro Comuzzo sent Gustavo Varela through on goal, and the forward lifted the ball over Lucas Perri in the 47th minute to level the match.

Torino regained control as the second half developed. Belghali put the hosts ahead in the 61st minute, cutting inside before curling a fine shot from outside the area into the bottom corner. Vlašić made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute, collecting the ball near the edge of the box and driving it high into the net.

Patterson’s own goal in stoppage time gave Monza a late route back into the contest, but Torino held on. The result extended Abate’s winning run, while Monza were left to reflect on defensive mistakes.

Abate praised his players’ response after conceding, but said improvements were needed.

“I liked the reaction after the goal we conceded. We wanted to win with quality and feeling, and we played a very good match,” he said. He was frustrated, however, that Torino had conceded two goals, taking their total to 11.

“It is something we have to and want to improve.”

The coach said the team’s connection with supporters had been a focus since his arrival.

“For us, the enthusiasm has to be fuel. We have to play with feeling for our people,” he said, saying the crowd could lift players. He warned against becoming satisfied, with another demanding match against Como approaching.

Monza coach Ivan Jurić felt his side had lost too many key duels and lacked energy as the match progressed.

“The Torino defenders won a lot of duels; we won far fewer,” he said. He believed Monza had been competitive before the break but conceded Torino were stronger after half-time.

Jurić also felt his side could have changed the outcome when Ricardo Mangas went down in the area.

“It seemed like a penalty to me,” he said, though he added that he did not want to dwell on the decision.

He acknowledged Torino had played better overall and said his squad was stretched, hoping to recover defender Jan Ziolkowski ahead of the busy schedule.
