Elliot Stroud's move to Hull City became one of Sweden's biggest transfer talking points this summer after a late U-turn on an agreement with Genoa.

The 24-year-old had appeared close to sealing a switch to the Serie A club, with Genoa claiming Stroud had signed a pre-contract before he opted for Hull instead — a decision the Italian side responded to by pursuing legal action against his representatives, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Mjällby AIF, who received a fee in the region of £3million for their departing winger, said they had no knowledge of any binding agreement with Genoa. Stroud left the Swedish champions after three and a half years, during which he scored 27 goals and provided 14 assists in 109 appearances, and signed a contract at Hull running to the summer of 2030.

Speaking to Sportbladet about his decision to join Hull City, Stroud explained that reaching England's top flight had long been the target.

"My biggest dream and ambition as a footballer is to play in the top division, and I still consider the Premier League to be the biggest and best league in the world," he said. "So when I heard about the interest from Hull, it felt like a good step in my career, both on a personal level and a footballing level."

It remains to be seen how significant a role the 24-year-old will play at his new club, though he is hopeful of making an impact soon.

"It's difficult to say this early on. I've only been here for two weeks so far, but I hope I can contribute with my strengths and help the team in that way," he said.

"Then it's up to the coach to decide whether he feels it's needed for particular matches."

Stroud was part of today's Hull team which stunned Manchester United in their Premier League opener.

"A lot of people have already written us off, and that means we have nothing to lose — we just have to go out there and prove everyone wrong," he said before kickoff. "For me personally, it gives me a bit of extra motivation and fuel to run a little more and show everyone."
