The controversy came in the first half, with Sevilla players appealing for the Turkish midfielder to be sent off after Peque went to ground following contact. The referee did not dismiss Güler, and the video assistant referee did not intervene.
Güler went on to open the scoring in the 30th minute, five minutes after the disputed incident. Kylian Mbappé doubled Real Madrid’s lead before half-time, and the hosts eventually secured the points despite Manu Bueno briefly reducing the deficit.
Juan Iglesias was among the Sevilla players to question the decisions after the match, speaking to Movistar Plus.
“We’ve been in the game and tried. It was a match decided by decisions that were made. I think it was an assault on Peque in the first half. I saw Güler’s action on Peque, which looked like an assault to me. I watched it at half-time,” Iglesias said.
He also complained about an alleged foul in the build-up to one of Real Madrid’s goals, arguing that Sevilla had been on the wrong side of several key calls.
“We have to do some self-criticism as well, but there have been decisions that haven’t gone our way,” he added.
Iglesias was also frustrated by the way Sevilla players felt they were prevented from approaching the officials to seek explanations.
“Many times you can’t speak to the referees and they don’t allow you to. They told us to go away because they would book us and, in the end, what’s the point of going over there, just to get a card? We knew what we were coming into and how everything would be,” he said.
Kike Salas had raised concerns about the incident as the players left the pitch at half-time. The defender said he trusted Peque’s account of the contact and questioned why the officials had not reviewed the incident.
“That action comes from an elbow that looks like a clear sending-off, but we can’t get into that,” Salas said. “Peque says he elbowed him, and he’s not going to throw himself to the ground and ask for medical attention. I trust my player. I’ll look at it now. They didn’t even intervene to look at it.”
Salas also felt that the match had been decided by a small number of incidents rather than a sustained difference between the teams.
“Two details they had made the difference,” he said.
Real Madrid won 4-1, with Güler scoring the opener, Mbappé adding two goals and Yan Diomande completing the scoring. Bueno’s 80th-minute strike briefly gave Sevilla hope before Diomande restored the home side’s three-goal cushion two minutes later.
The result was clear on the scoreboard, but Sevilla’s post-match reaction focused heavily on the failure to dismiss Güler. The club’s players believed the incident should have been reviewed more closely, leaving the officiating as a major talking point after their defeat in Madrid.
