Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has named Mohamed Salah in his World Cup squad alongside a surprise call for Barcelona youth forward Hamza Abdelkarim, dubbed the new Salah in his homeland.

Salah, 33, will be competing in his second World Cup after his debut appearance at Russia 2018, where he scored twice as Egypt were eliminated at the group stage.

He arrives in the summer having left Liverpool after nine seasons in which he scored 257 goals and won six major trophies, and will use the tournament as a showcase for whichever club he joins next. Omar Marmoush of Manchester City is the other established European-based name in the squad.

The most striking selection is Abdelkarim, who joined Barcelona on loan from Al-Ahly SC in February 2026. The 18-year-old, who stands at 1.82m, has made an immediate impression in the club's under-19 side, most recently scoring a hat-trick in 15 minutes in a 9-0 victory over Montecarlo.

Barcelona have a purchase option of โ‚ฌ1.5m rising to โ‚ฌ6.5m with variables โ€” a fee that looks increasingly likely to be triggered given his form.

Abdelkarim was identified by Barcelona's scouts at the Under-17 World Cup and the Under-17 African Cup of Nations, with the club moving ahead of Bayern Munich, Olympique de Lyon and AC Milan to secure his signature.

Also selected is Haitham Hassan, the Real Oviedo midfielder who became the first player from the club to be called up to the Egyptian national team in March.

One notable absence is striker Mostafa Mohamed of Nantes, who had been a regular in previous squads.

Egypt are in Group G and face Belgium on June 15, New Zealand on June 22 and Iran on June 27. The squad will be trimmed from 27 to 26 after a friendly against Russia on May 28. This is only the fourth time Egypt have qualified for the World Cup.
