Riquelme targets Klopp for Madrid presidential bid as challenge to Pérez takes shape

Enrique Riquelme, challenging Florentino Pérez for the Real Madrid presidency, has held contact with Jürgen Klopp's entourage as part of his rival bid to reshape the club's sporting direction.

Riquelme, the 37-year-old Alicante-born businessman who is challengingérez for the Real Madrid presidency, has held contact with the management of Klopp as part of his effort to build a credible sporting project — with the German coach identified as the centerpiece of a rival vision to bring to Madrid's socios.

El Confidencial first reported the contact. Klopp has not responded formally, and much of the reason is that Riquelme's candidacy did not officially exist until Pérez called snap elections this week — a move widely seen as designed to deny any rival the time to mount a proper campaign.

The deadline for candidacy submissions runs from May 14 to May 23. To meet the requirements, Riquelme needs to gather approximately €187 million in financial guarantees and demonstrate 22 years of uninterrupted membership at the club. He has been a socio for over 20 years.

The financial guarantee is his primary obstacle — though his estimated fortune of €450 million, built through renewable energy company Cox Energy and its associated infrastructure operations across Mexico and Latin America, suggests the barrier is at least theoretically surmountable.

The contrast with Pérez's project could not be starker. Where Pérez wants Mourinho — a hard-line disciplinarian to restore authority — Riquelme's pitch rests on Klopp's brand of collective intensity, emotional connection with supporters and attacking football. The two philosophies represent a genuine fork in what kind of club Real Madrid wants to be in this next cycle.

Iker Casillas, who clashed badly with Mourinho during his first spell, has publicly backed Riquelme's candidacy — a significant symbolic endorsement given his standing among the club's support.

Riquelme said publicly: "I have immense respect for Mr Pérez. He is perhaps the best president in the history of the club. However, there are cycles, and Real Madrid is not at its best right now."

Whether Riquelme can clear the financial and logistical hurdles inside the remaining days remains to be seen. The odds remain heavily in Pérez's favour.
