The 31-year-old Spain international's release clause drops sharply this summer, falling from €50 million to €12 million as he enters the final year of his deal. That shift has made him one of the most financially accessible quality goalkeepers in European football and alerted several clubs to the possibility of a cut-price move.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Sociedad have responded by offering Remiro a new deal that would extend his stay at the Reale Arena by at least two seasons. The club is determined not to lose a player of his quality for a reduced fee — and even more determined not to see him leave for nothing in 2027.
Barcelona's interest has been tracked for some time. Sporting director Deco has held discussions with Remiro's agents on more than one occasion, and the club initially identified him as an option before signing Joan García last summer.
The current thinking inside the club is to position Remiro as a second-choice behind García, though Barcelona acknowledge they are not in a position to make this a financial priority and may be content to wait until 2027 to sign him on a free transfer.
Real Sociedad captain Aritz Elustondo made the club's position plain in a recent interview, insisting Remiro would end his career at the club. That may prove optimistic given the scale of interest, but it reflects the determination inside the organisation to keep their first-choice goalkeeper.
Remiro himself has asked for time. He is understood to be content at Real Sociedad and focused on finishing the season strongly before assessing his options. The World Cup this summer is another factor — Remiro wants to know whether Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente will consider him a serious option before making a long-term decision about his club future. He has been Spain's third choice behind Unai Simón and David Raya in recent seasons.
On the question of Barcelona publicly, Remiro has been characteristically non-committal.
"I've heard something on the networks, but now I'm very focused on Real. You never know," he said earlier in the season.
Newcastle United and Aston Villa had reportedly made approaches last summer, only for Remiro to decline. Inter Milan are now also monitoring his situation. For Real Sociedad, the priority is clear — tie him down before the summer window opens and the clause drops.
