Negotiations have accelerated over an agreement that would extend the Belgian’s existing deal by one year. According to reports from Spain, both parties are aligned on the broad terms, although the renewal has yet to be officially announced.
Courtois, who is 34, is currently contracted to Madrid until 2027. The proposed extension would allow him to remain the club’s first-choice goalkeeper through to the age of 36 and bring his time in the Spanish capital to a decade.
The club’s approach follows an established policy with senior players, generally preferring to renew contracts on a season-by-season basis once they pass 30. In Courtois’s case, however, Madrid are reportedly keen to resolve the situation earlier rather than leave negotiations until the closing stages of the campaign.
The goalkeeper’s performances have strengthened the club’s desire to retain him. Since arriving from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has won three LaLiga titles and two Champions League trophies with Madrid, producing several outstanding performances on the biggest occasions.
His display in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool was particularly memorable, as he made a series of saves to secure a 1-0 victory and help Madrid lift the trophy.
Courtois has become a central figure in the team’s plans, and maintaining stability in goal is an important part of the club’s longer-term squad planning.
An extension would also give Madrid additional time to prepare for the eventual transition to a successor. The club continue to look towards developing younger goalkeepers, but Courtois would remain the undisputed first choice in domestic and European competition while he is fit and available.
The Belgian’s age has not prompted Madrid to delay discussions. Instead, the reported progress reflects confidence in his continued value to the team and a shared desire to extend the partnership.
An official announcement is still awaited, but the negotiations appear to be moving towards an agreement that would keep one of Madrid’s most influential players at the club for another season.
