The Magpies have funds to reinvest after Sandro Tonali's move to Tottenham Hotspur, a deal worth up to ยฃ100m that has significantly boosted the club's transfer budget.
Newcastle United have also banked a substantial fee from Anthony Gordon's departure to Barcelona, reported at around ยฃ69m, giving Eddie Howe's side considerable spending power heading into the closing weeks of the window.
Steur represents a very different type of addition โ a young, homegrown Ajax academy graduate rather than an established Premier League performer, but one whose early performances have caught plenty of attention.
Steur only signed a new contract with Ajax last summer, though that deal runs only until 2028, leaving the Dutch club in an awkward position. His value is likely to fall once he enters the final year of that contract next summer, adding urgency to any decision over a sale now rather than risking losing him for a reduced fee, or for nothing, further down the line.
The midfielder made his first-team debut in December and quickly nailed down a regular starting role, featuring in Ajax's win over rivals Feyenoord in the De Klassieker just a couple of weeks later. His underlying numbers have been striking for a player of his age: according to Opta, among midfielders who started the Eredivisie season aged 18 or younger, Steur ranked first for chances created (15), total carries (231) and duel success (56.8%). He also placed second for passes attempted (623), passing accuracy (89.7%), tackles (20), possession won (49) and duels won (46).
Those numbers help explain Newcastle's interest in a player still developing physically but already showing the on-ball qualities to suggest he could grow into a regular Premier League midfielder in time.
The move would also fit a pattern of Newcastle targeting promising young talent from continental academies alongside their more established, higher-profile signings this summer, as the club continues to balance short-term needs with longer-term squad planning under Howe.
