Mourinho satisfied as Real Madrid close out preseason in style

José Mourinho wrapped up an almost perfect preseason on a high note, with Real Madrid's win over Schalke leaving him encouraged ahead of the LaLiga opener.

Three wins, over Ferencvaros, Deportivo and Schalke, and a draw against Fiorentina left Real Madrid in good shape heading into their league opener against Espanyol next weekend, with the Portuguese head coach reflecting on the German outing in comments carried by RMTV.

Mourinho was pleased with what he saw from his side collectively against Schalke, even if individual sharpness varied across the squad.

"Positive as a team. Individually there are people who arrived later and still don't have the same intensity as the lads who have been here longer, there's a difference in rhythm, but the ideas are gradually coming together.

"We have players of superior quality, incredible quality. We're working very well as a team, with and without the ball.

"It's been a very good test, a great final training session before we start the real thing: competing properly, which is what we like."

Asked to assess the level within his squad, Mourinho preferred to speak in collective terms rather than singling players out.

"At this moment it's difficult to talk individually, because we're functioning as a team. Here we only have players who are good, very good or very, very, very good. I'm very happy with the latest arrivals, because it isn't easy for them: a double session in the morning and afternoon, with incredible heat in the five o'clock training session, and they still landed with a top mentality."

On how he plans to manage minutes for Kylian Mbappé, Ibrahima Konaté and Marc Cucurella, the coach pointed to a data-driven approach.

"We analyse scientifically the minutes each player has had, as well as each individual's own experience."

Mourinho confirmed his squad is in strong physical condition heading into the opener, "We arrive in a very acceptable condition."

He struck an optimistic tone when asked to sum up his feelings for the season ahead.

"We're all excited, and the players are too, which is the most important thing: if they aren't, we have a problem. These are small details that matter a lot. Both the people who came earlier and those who arrived on the last day have prepared very well to be sharp. There's empathy and collective work. The team is starting to look like a team."

Real Madrid's preseason campaign began with the draw against Fiorentina in Austria before wins over Ferencvaros and Deportivo, the latter securing the Teresa Herrera Trophy, ahead of Saturday's LaLiga curtain-raiser at the RCDE Stadium against Espanyol.

Mourinho took particular care over managing his squad's physical loads across the four fixtures, resting key players at different stages and making wholesale changes against Schalke to assess his options before the campaign proper begins.
