José Mourinho has confirmed he refused to read Benfica's new contract offer and will not consider his future until after Saturday's final league game — setting up what he described as a decisive week for both himself and the Portuguese club.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to GD Estoril Praia, the 63-year-old was direct about the sequence of events.

"On Wednesday my agent received the written offer from Benfica. I said: 'No, I don't want it. Not now. From Sunday, yes.'"

He was equally clear on the absence of any approach from Real Madrid, whose return he is widely reported to be considering.

"As for Real Madrid, they never told me there was an offer. Not the president, nor any important person in the structure. If they had told me, I would have answered the same way."

On the timeline for resolution.

"The next week is important for my future. When the season ends, the club has to start thinking about the next one. By contract and agreement, we have a window of eight to ten days to see what is there and make a decision."

He deflected a question about Florentino Pérez's press conference of the previous Tuesday, maintaining the respectful distance that has characterised his public positioning throughout.

"I haven't seen it. If I had, who am I to comment on the press conference of a president? I never do that. Much less of a president with the history of Don Florentino."

On Álvaro Arbeloa, he spoke with genuine affection.

"He is a friend. He is one of those players who gave everything, who gave his soul and his life for me when he was my player. And now that he is coach of Real Madrid, if there is already that connection between the club and me, with Álvaro on the bench it increases even more my connection and desire for things to go well."

Mourinho's release clause at Benfica stands at €3 million. Sky Sport Germany reports he has set two conditions for a return to Madrid: full control of the dressing room and a meaningful say in transfer activity. Benfica face Estoril on Saturday. Mourinho expects to begin making his decision on Sunday.
