The 40-year-old Croatian joined AC Milan last summer from Real Madrid on a one-year deal, with an option โ in his favour โ to extend through the 2026-27 season. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he is inclined to stay for another year, but two conditions are shaping his decision: Champions League football next season, and the continued presence of coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Milan head into the final day in third place, two points clear of fifth-placed Como. A win over Cagliari would confirm Champions League qualification regardless of results elsewhere. A draw or defeat would leave them dependent on results involving Roma, Como and Juventus.
Modric has not played since suffering a fractured cheekbone in a collision with Manuel Locatelli during the goalless draw with Juventus at the end of April, a blow that ruled him out for the final weeks of the campaign. Despite the setback, his desire to continue has not diminished.
"I am very happy at Milan, but the most important thing now is the match against Cagliari on Sunday and Champions League qualification. The rest we will see," he told Sport Mediaset this week. "I have good relations with the club, the management and the coach."
He added: "When I chose Milan, it was to help and try to win. This year it has not happened, but it is clear I would like to win a trophy with Milan."
Modric has made 33 Serie A starts this season โ more first-team minutes than in any of his final five campaigns at Real Madrid. His leadership in the dressing room has been valued as highly as his performances on the pitch, with younger players treating him as both a mentor and a model professional.
He is also preparing for the 2026 World Cup with Croatia, which is expected to be his final international tournament.
A win on Sunday ends the debate about his future for at least another year.
