Militão receives positive recovery update as Real Madrid return approaches

Real Madrid

Eder Militão has received another positive assessment in his recovery from a serious hamstring injury, with the Real Madrid defender now entering the final stage of his rehabilitation.

The Brazilian was visited at Valdebebas by Lasse Lampainen, the Finnish doctor who operated on him, as the pair reviewed his progress alongside Real Madrid’s medical and performance staff.

Lampainen described the latest assessment as a successful day of work with Militão, who continues to follow the rehabilitation programme established after his surgery.

“Returning to the pitch is a milestone. Returning to your highest level of performance is the goal,” Lampainen said.

Militão underwent surgery on 28 April 2026 after suffering a proximal hamstring tendon tear. The initial recovery period was estimated at five months, putting the defender on course for a potential return during October.

The centre-back has already been seen undertaking demanding physical work on the pitch and the latest assessment from the surgeon who operated on him represents another step towards a return to team training.

His next stage will be to work alongside his Real Madrid team-mates. The timing of his return to competitive action will depend on how he responds to that work and how long he needs to regain his best physical condition.

The process comes after a prolonged period of injury problems for Militão.

His difficulties began during the 2023-24 season, when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. That injury kept him out for 231 days.

The following campaign brought three further injuries, including another complete ACL tear, this time to his right knee, accompanied by damage to both menisci. He spent another 255 days out of action.

Last season brought four more injuries, taking Militão’s total time on the sidelines since 2023 to 781 days.

His latest challenge is therefore not simply to return to the pitch but to rebuild his level after spending so much time away from competitive football.

Before his injuries, Militão had established himself as one of the leading centre-backs in world football and an important part of Real Madrid’s defence.

The latest work at Valdebebas has provided another indication that the Brazilian is moving towards the end of a long rehabilitation process.

For Real Madrid, the next milestone will be seeing Militão resume work with the first-team group. From there, his return will be determined by his physical response and his progress towards full match fitness.
