Messi injury scare eases as Inter Miami rule out serious damage before World Cup

Argentina and Inter Miami's worst fears have been eased.

Lionel Messi's left thigh problem, which prompted his early substitution during Sunday's 6-4 win over Philadelphia Union, has been diagnosed as muscular overload and fatigue rather than a structural injury.

Inter Miami confirmed on Monday that initial examinations showed no evidence of a serious muscle tear, with the club stating that the 38-year-old's return to activity would depend on the progress of his clinical recovery. Argentine newspaper La NaciΓ³n reported that Messi could be back to full fitness within approximately ten days.

The concern was immediate and significant. Messi was seen grabbing the back of his left thigh in the 70th minute after taking a free kick and immediately signalled to the bench, a sight that drew alarm across the footballing world less than three weeks before the start of the 2026 World Cup.

He walked off unaided, which was taken as an encouraging sign, but headed straight down the tunnel rather than remaining on the substitutes' bench β€” a detail that intensified speculation about the severity of the problem.

Inter Miami interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos moved quickly to temper the reaction.

"He was exhausted. The pitch was heavy, and rather than risk further fatigue, we chose to substitute him," Hoyos said after the match.

The update from the club confirmed that account. There is no structural damage and no suggestion Argentina should fear losing their captain for the opening stages of the tournament.

Argentina begin the defence of their world title on 17 June against Algeria in Kansas City in Group J. Further group matches follow against Austria on 22 June and Jordan on 27 June. Messi is expected to feature in all three, with preparatory friendlies against Honduras and Iceland scheduled for 6 and 9 June offering additional opportunities to assess his readiness.

MLS has now entered its World Cup break, which removes any further club risk between now and tournament kickoff.

Argentina left Brazil in 2026 with the trophy. Their plan is to leave North America with it too β€” and on current evidence, their captain should be there for every step of that attempt.
