Marseille great Waddle hails Greenwood success

Mason Greenwood broke a two-month scoring drought with the only goal of Olympique de Marseille's 1-0 victory over Le Havre, then used the occasion to publicly back manager Habib Beye amid reports of a fractured relationship.

The 24-year-old former Manchester United and Getafe forward converted a penalty and was seen sharing a handshake with Beye on the touchline — a gesture both parties acknowledged was deliberate given the scrutiny surrounding them.

Greenwood spoke after the final whistle.

"We gave it our all today. The last few weeks haven't been good. There's a lot of talk in the media, but Habib is a good guy. I believe in him, and he believes in me."

"I had a minor injury against Lille. Maybe I came back a little too soon. Today I felt 100%."

"It's a great experience to be at Marseille. The supporters are extraordinary. It's an important end to the season with a big challenge against a very good team. We'll fight until the end."

Beye was equally pointed in his response to the stories circulating about the pair.

"There's nothing to explain. The image is beautiful because it's perhaps necessary on Mason's part with everything that's been said. When I see the lies told about me and some of my players, when I hear that I had a clash, that I stopped training because of Mason Greenwood — that's what saddens me today in this profession, where nothing is verified anymore. It's a race to spread misinformation and lies. What Mason did was symbolic. I thank him for that, he didn't have to do it."

Greenwood's goal took his tally to 48 in 80 appearances for Marseille, including a career-best 26 across all competitions this season. That form has seen his transfer valuation pushed well beyond £50 million, with clubs including Juventus reported to be monitoring the situation.

Former Marseille and England winger Chris Waddle, speaking to Goal, was effusive about what Greenwood has achieved at the Vélodrome.

"I know what it's like. They are demanding. They want a show. But they demand a lot from the players. They think they should be at the top of the championship."

"Since his arrival, he has played well. He is performing consistently. He scores regularly, he contributes regularly to goals. He has earned penalties, but he is there, he is in form."

"I am certain that many clubs are following his development and watching him closely. If he were to leave Marseille one day, several clubs would be interested in Mason."

"He has been excellent at Marseille. This club has been very inconsistent over the past two or three years. He has been one of the brightest elements in the team. He has a good age. He seems focused on his work. He knows what Marseille demands and he tries to give it to them. We can say he has unquestionably succeeded at Marseille."

The result keeps Marseille's European hopes alive heading into the final weeks of the Ligue 1 season.
