Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta has declared head coach Cristian Chivu's appointment as a bold decision vindicated by results, ahead of Wednesday's Coppa Italia final against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Marotta spoke to SportMediaset before travelling to the capital and addressed the significance of a cup competition that Inter view with the same seriousness as the league.

"The Coppa Italia is a romantic and fascinating competition and we care very much about it. We have a trophy cabinet full of victories in this competition, we reached the final on merit and we want to bring it home.

"The fact that we went to see President Mattarella only gives us extra motivation and stimulus in what will certainly be a beautiful occasion. The Olimpico is sold out, against a respected and prestigious club."

He defended the decision to appoint Chivu β€” who had never managed at this level before taking charge of Inter β€” against the scepticism that greeted the appointment earlier in the season.

"The most important values that have characterised our journey are two: humility and courage. The humility that goes hand in hand with the culture of work and sense of belonging, as well as the courage to have made a decision that probably didn't have much consensus but which on our part had been carefully evaluated β€” to entrust the team to a coach who is certainly emerging. Chivu has the merit of having a league title within reach and a Coppa Italia final."

He noted the unusual spectacle of a Serie A title race and a Rome derby falling in the same final week of the season β€” further complicated by the simultaneous presence of a major tennis event metres from the Olimpico.

"It is something particular, extraordinary. It has been years since we arrived at the final two matchdays being practically decisive. This is the beauty of football and sport. And it is equally strange that there is the Rome derby in the penultimate round β€” simultaneously with a sporting event that is tennis. It happens hundreds of metres from the Olimpico. Clearly a very delicate public order problem. I hope it can be resolved."

Inter won the Serie A title with three matches to spare, their 21st Italian championship. A Coppa Italia victory would be their eighth in history.
