Manchester City had typically settled on captains through a vote among the squad under Pep Guardiola, though the Catalan broke with that tradition in his final season after a difficult campaign under Kyle Walker's captaincy.
Maresca is following the same personal-selection approach, and wants an English influence within his new leadership group as he settles into life at the Etihad Stadium.
Ruben Dias is the clear favourite to take the armband, having rejoined the squad last week following his post-World Cup break. Dias and Erling Haaland are considered certainties to retain positions of authority they held last season, but a new leader is required after Bernardo Silva sealed a free transfer to Real Madrid over the summer.
Dias had operated as Guardiola's de facto second-in-command behind Bernardo, with Haaland fourth in the pecking order and Rodri third, though the Spain international is hoping to push through a move of his own to Barcelona, with City having already rejected an opening bid of close to £40m for the midfielder.
Should Rodri depart, Maresca would need two further captains to step into the leadership group, with Josko Gvardiol and Phil Foden having already made clear they are open to taking on greater responsibility.
Foden and Dias have both captained the side in City's opening two pre-season friendlies in Asia, while January signing Marc Guéhi, who previously captained Crystal Palace before his £20m move, is another candidate under consideration.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's friendly against Atlético Madrid, Maresca played down the weight of the decision.
"There is no pressure (on me), just a privilege," he said. "In terms of expectations, this is a club that needs to win titles. We're going to try to do exactly that."
