The France international was close to leaving the Italian club for Chelsea in the final stages of the window, with the Premier League side looking for a midfielder after Enzo Fernández completed his move to Manchester City.
Chelsea ultimately focused on Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, but that deal collapsed on deadline day after Monaco stopped the transfer from going through.
Koné therefore remained at Roma despite also being linked with Arsenal and Manchester United during the summer.
Asked about the events surrounding the transfer window, Koné made clear that his attention is now firmly on his current club.
“There were things happening,” Koné said at a press conference, according to Get French Football News. “I am in Rome. I am focused. We have goals. I am an AS Roma player and I will give 100 per cent for this club.”
Chelsea’s pursuit of a new midfielder had become increasingly urgent after Fernández’s departure. The London club had held talks over Koné and also explored other midfield options, but ultimately failed to complete a deal for Camara.
AS Roma had been prepared to consider Koné’s departure, with reports in Italy detailing the negotiations between the clubs. However, Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini ultimately opposed the sale and the transfer did not materialise.
Koné has subsequently remained an important member of the Roma squad.
The 25-year-old has made 88 appearances for the club in all competitions since arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach, scoring six goals and providing six assists.
His current contract runs until the summer of 2029, leaving Roma in a strong contractual position should interest return in future windows.
Liverpool are now among the clubs reported to be monitoring the midfielder. The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported earlier in September that the Anfield club had developed an interest in Koné ahead of a potential future move.
Roma are also understood to value the midfielder highly. Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that the Italian club would demand more than €100 million to sell Koné.
For the player himself, however, the focus has shifted away from what might have happened during the final days of the window.
Koné has already experienced the uncertainty of being close to a major transfer without completing it. His comments suggest that, at least for now, he is concentrating on his role at Roma and the targets the club have set for the season.
His long-term future could still become a major transfer story, but Koné’s immediate message is that his attention remains in Rome.
