Manchester United's appointment of Busby follows their failed attempt to hire Newcastle's head of youth recruitment Paul Midgley in December.
It also echoes the 2024 signing of then-sporting director Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United โ a move that cost the Magpies a significant compensation settlement and resulted in one of the most public disputes between Premier League clubs in recent years. Ashworth lasted only five months at Old Trafford before departing.
Newcastle confirmed they are relaxed about Busby's departure, viewing it as an indication that their youth scouting infrastructure is producing staff of sufficient quality to attract Premier League rivals. Busby's role at Newcastle has been filled internally.
Manchester United have simultaneously appointed Darren Hughes, poached from Manchester City after 12 years there, as Head of Academy Football Development and Methodology โ a newly created position. Hughes worked at City under academy director Stephen Torpey, who has now brought him to United in the same overhaul.
Wilcox, Hughes and Torpey had previously collaborated at City, and the former is now overseeing a broader restructuring of United's academy in line with the strategic vision set out following INEOS's investment in early 2024.
Connor Hunter, who previously held Busby's role, was promoted to head of academy recruitment this season. United's willingness to create and fill senior scouting roles reflects the club's determination to build a more rigorous talent identification pipeline โ an area that received public scrutiny after a period in which the first team saw little meaningful output from the youth system.
