The playmaker was forced from the field early in the second half at Stamford Bridge with a suspected groin problem, prompting concern that he could face another lengthy spell on the sidelines. However, sources close to the player have described the issue as fairly minor.
It remains uncertain whether Maddison will be available when Tottenham host Crystal Palace on Saturday. Roberto De Zerbi is expected to provide a further update at his pre-match press conference.
The injury comes after Maddison had only recently returned to the starting line-up following a difficult period. He marked his first start in 18 months with a spectacular goal in the 3-1 win over Coventry, helping Spurs begin their recent improvement in results.
Maddison has endured a succession of problems over the past 18 months. He first damaged his medial ligament towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign, ruling him out of Tottenham’s Europa League semi-final and final as the club went on to win the competition.
He then suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season in August 2025. The midfielder has experienced further setbacks since returning towards the end of the previous campaign, making his latest problem an unwelcome concern even if it proves to be minor.
Tottenham have won their last two matches and can make it three consecutive victories against Palace. Maddison’s creativity in the number 10 role has been missed during his absences, and his return to form against Coventry offered a reminder of the influence he can have.
The club will therefore be keen to establish the extent of the groin issue before deciding whether he can feature this weekend. Other players who missed the Chelsea match through injury include Tosin Adarabioyo, Lucas Bergvall, Savio, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons.
Mykhailo Mudryk is also unavailable after suffering an ankle injury in training. The winger would not have been eligible to face his parent club Chelsea in any case.
For De Zerbi, Maddison’s availability will be an important part of preparations for Palace, with Tottenham hoping the latest scare does not interrupt the midfielder’s gradual return to regular football.
