The Georgia international was forced off during Tuesday’s match and appeared devastated as he left the pitch. Medical examinations subsequently confirmed the severity of the injury, with PSG announcing that he will undergo surgery in the coming days.
The diagnosis is a major setback for the 25-year-old, who was one of the standout performers in PSG’s run to last season’s Champions League title. The injury is expected to keep him out for a substantial period and could end his campaign.
Kvaratskhelia addressed the news in an emotional post on Instagram, reflecting on the uncertainty of football and the question of why such an injury had happened to him.
“Many people have asked me this question, and some even went so far as to say that if all the footballers in the world prayed, the match would end in a draw. Perhaps that was true, but before every match I asked God to let me leave the pitch safe and sound. But it was not to be,” he wrote.
“Not much time has passed, but this question keeps going around in my head: why me?”
The winger said he had prepared for the Barcelona fixture more carefully than ever, making the injury particularly difficult to accept.
“I probably never left anything to chance. I prepared for this match better than ever before. I thought I was ready for anything, but not for this,” he continued.
Kvaratskhelia also tried to find meaning in the setback, saying he was prepared to endure the rehabilitation process and work towards a return.
“And yet I realise that God chose me, and if by doing this I protected the other footballers on the pitch, I am ready to spend these months working, through pain and tears. I know I have to come back stronger for my loved ones, who are always by my side. I will not disappoint you. I promise I will not miss a moment. Thank you all for your support. See you soon.”
PSG’s win over Barcelona was overshadowed by several injuries. Ousmane Dembélé suffered a left-thigh injury and Marquinhos sustained a problem with his right thigh, with both players also expected to spend time in treatment.
For Kvaratskhelia, the focus now turns to surgery and rehabilitation. His message made clear that the recovery will be difficult, but he is determined to return to the pitch.
