According to Kicker — one of Germany's most authoritative football publications — disagreements have recently emerged between the 32-year-old and Bayern Munich over the terms and length of a contract extension. Kane had been in discussions about a new deal running to 2028 or 2029, but those talks appear to have reached an impasse.
The timing matters. Kane's current contract runs until June 2027. A clause that would have allowed him to trigger a departure for approximately €60-70 million this summer expired without being activated. Bayern's public position is that this puts them in a position of strength.
Their honorary president Uli Hoeness stated: "His release clause for the summer of 2026 has now expired and his contract runs until summer 2027. We are currently under no pressure."
The reality, however, is more nuanced. With one year remaining on his deal, Kane now holds genuine leverage. He can negotiate pre-contract discussions with other clubs from January 2027 and leave for free in the summer of that year. Bayern's advantage of a two-year contract has compressed to one.
Kicker reports that clubs with significant financial resources have been closely monitoring the situation. England and Saudi Arabia are floated as possible destinations — without further detail — and the report confirms that lucrative offers cannot be excluded. Barcelona had been linked, but the Catalans appear focused on pursuing Julián Álvarez.
Bayern honourary president Hoeness had earlier acknowledged the Saudi dimension.
"You never know when a Saudi comes along and puts a lot of money on the table. But he feels very much at home."
Kane's numbers justify the attention from across the game. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions this season — including 44 as a starter — and added seven assists. His partnership with Michael Olise and Luis Díaz, who joined Bayern last summer, produced one of the most potent attacking units in the Bundesliga.
Vincent Kompany's attacking system is built around Kane. That is precisely why Bayern need to resolve this quickly — and why the failure to do so before the World Cup is a concern the club did not want heading into the tournament.
